1. Jack Daniel's is made in a dry county

It is a little known fact that the county in which Jack Daniel's is produced, Moore County in Tennessee, is a dry county. The laws against alcohol there have been carried on from the 1900s, when the whole state was dry for almost 30 years.



2. There are four versions of Jack Daniel's

Most people think of the original Old No. 7 when they think of Jack Daniel's; but Gentleman Jack, Jack Daniel's Single Barrel, and Tennessee Honey are all produced under the same name.

On the Jack Daniel’s Whiskey Facebook page you can create your own label to decorate your next whiskey. In fact, you can make up to ten of your own labels per month.

5. There have only been 7 Master Distillers

Although Jack Daniel’s is 146 years old there have only ever been 7 Master Distillers. Master Distillers are responsible for maintaining the quality of the product, and continue to use many of the techniques that the first Master, Jack, put in place.



6. Jack was 13 when he started his business

The Daniel’s distillery started with Jack’s good friend and local Lutheran minister, Dan Call, whose wife demanded he either sell the distillery or give up preaching. Dan sold the business to Jack, who was only 13 at the time.



7. There is no timetable for distilling

Rather than maturing the whiskey for a certain amount of time, at Jack Daniel’s the liquor is determined ready by its taste, look, and smell.



8. A touristy town

The Tennessee town where Jack Daniel’s is located, Lynchburg, has only 365 residents but receives hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. The distillery employees 371 people, and jokes that no employees skip work on the first Friday of the month, when pay-checks and a complementary bottle of whiskey are given out.



9. Jack's untimely death

One morning Jack became frustrated trying to get the company's books out of a safe—he kept forgetting the combination—and kicked it in anger. Jack ended up breaking is big toe on the safe, and dying of subsequent infection. Ironically, a sterilizing splash of his own product could have saved his life.

10. Frank Sinatra's whiskey legacy

Frank Sinatra was known for being a whiskey drinker, and was buried with a bottle of the original No. 7. In 2015, Jack Daniel's will release a special edition bottle in celebration of Sinatra's 100th birthday.

Jack Daniel kept the origins of the name Old No. 7 a secret — one he carried to his grave. People are still fascinated by the legends that surround the name; it even inspired a commercial.
